You have become the person who can get you where you want to go.
โWhy do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open? Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking. The entrance door to the sanctuary is inside you.โ
I've been noticing little shackles breaking open since the New Moon. The things that were holding me back from fully stepping into the version of myself I want to be. The paralyzing fear that came with the actions I needed to take to create the experience of life I feel called to provide for myself and my kids. The doubts and apprehension that seem to be guarding the gates of the threshold I have to cross to make my separation official. The insecurities that have kept my expression and self-image confined to the small space that the judgment of others has allotted them.
The Libra New Moon last weekend handed us the master key to the prison of our hearts, letting us unlock the things that have kept us confined to the cells of past versions of ourselves. Proving to us that the little actions are the ones that mean the most. The ones that might just be making a call, booking an appointment, showing up to read our art allowed to a room. Those accumulate to bot the ones that are publishing the book or opening the new space.
This week has felt like a liberating reclamation of self as we embrace the role of constable in our own lives. Yes, we operate in this big world with many rules and laws, but at the end of the day, we choose how we operate within it. We choose which values, communities, ideas, and beliefs align with us, and how we invest our time and energy in each of them.
And there is something incredibly empowering about recognizing how much authority we have over the experience of our lives.
The Mountain Ahead
While Libra season wanes, the Moon's energy is waxing until it reaches its First Quarter Phase on Sunday, October 18, at 12:13 PM EDT in Capricorn.
Represented by the Sea-Goat, Capricorn gallops in with some of the most ambitious, determined, and steady energy of all the zodiac signs.
There is something so eloquently timed about having the First Quarter Moon in Capricorn. The alchemy of these two signs brings an excess of supportive energy into the collective, beginning as soon as the Moon moves into Capricorn on Friday, October 16.
The practicality, determination, and paternal influence of Capricorn flow in, becoming more recognizable as an opportunity to parent ourselves.
The collective is seeing a long mountain to traverse ahead of them, one that may cost a good decade of their time. With Libra season asking us to be the judge of ourselves and Saturn ruling Capricorn, we receive this paternal, fatherly guidance that reminds us of all the lessons in responsibility, discipline, and restriction we've learned over the various mountains we've traversed in previous versions of ourselves.
As we approach this new mountain of grandeur, we can take a second to ask ourselves: How can we traverse this one better? More aligned, more efficiently, more enjoyably? What structure, preparation, tools, and resources do we need to take responsibility for on this trip?
In retrospect, reflecting on past hikes reminds us of the slightest moments that were stolen by regret.
"The hike was great, butโฆ"
We wished we'd worn different shoes, packed our bag differently, or maybe even brought some wine to take those extra sips of pleasure to pair with the view.
It's funny how often we can look back on an experience and recognize all the little things we would have done differently. Not necessarily to make the journey easier, but to make the experience of it better.
And perhaps that's where Capricorn's paternal energy becomes particularly meaningful.
Becoming the Person You Need
There is a point in our maturity when we become the person responsible for all of the things. As a kid, you don't realize how much effort, preparation, time, and money the pursuit of happiness cost the people who constructed the experiences you got to live.
I look back and see how long it took my dad to pack the car to go camping, let alone the hour-and-a-half setup of camp once we arrived. I notice how many baking dishes, mixing bowls, paint cups, art supplies, and God knows what else my mom cleaned up after me when I was letting my creative outlets thrive. What it takes now for me to pack me and my kids up to fly somewhere away from their comforts of home.
There is a responsibility in how we experience life. Each and every one of us is empowered to live life as little or as fully as we choose, within our circumstances.
We spend so much of our lives learning how to operate within the world around us. Governments, schools, technology, AI, societal norms, and the expectations of others all influence how we believe we should conduct our lives. And somewhere within all of that, our own inner authority can become difficult to recognize.
๐ This First Quarter Moon expands our awareness and our excitement for our right to experience life.
It invites us to embrace an empowering moment that gives us the freedom to pursue happiness, wholeness, and a purposeful existence in the ways that feel aligned with us.
But that freedom also comes with the responsibility of creating those experiences for ourselves.
It makes me think of an out-of-body experience where we get to accumulate all of the lessons, all of the wisdom, all of the efficiencies and pleasantries we discovered on every other mountain we've had to climb and give them to our current selves.
We can care for our current selves as if we are a parent. We can help ourselves feel supported by preparing the budget we didn't make the first time we left home, or disciplining ourselves in places where we might be acting too indulgently. We can recognize where we need more structure, where we need to prepare differently, and where we need to make a little more room for enjoyment along the way.
If you are the parent of the person you are today, how would you support them? How would you help them build the life they wanted?
There is something beautiful about reaching a point in our maturation where we can give ourselves the guidance, support, and love that we may have needed in previous versions of ourselves. We can support ourselves in our maturation and integrate our wisdom by giving it back to ourselves.
You have found over a lifetime of experience that YOU are the most reliable person to yourself. You have become someone you can rely on more than anyone else you know. That shouldn't be felt with a chip on your shoulder. That should be felt with pride in the strength you hold and the warrior spirit that lives within your soul.
The Wisdom We Carry
As the season changes, we know the veils thin. What may be less well known is that, within the spiritual traditions that recognize this thinning, it's not just the vague "other side" and the depths of our shadows that we seek to access. It's also a connection to the other side of our ancestral roots and wisdom.
๐ฎ There are a few things that intuitively pull at me in this energy, each one feeling like something worth bringing along for the mountain ahead.
1. Your Plan Has Good Bones
Capricorn rules the bones and joints. I quickly hear, "It has good bones!" But not in a home-structure way, in a project-plan way. Your plan is your home for this journey. Your plan, how you're preparing to traverse this mountain, has good bones!
If you've been putting thought into your next year, five years, or even ten years, trust the plan. Trust the preparation and thought you've already put into it. Sometimes the timing of our next chapter becomes clearer once we're ready to begin walking through it.
2. You Were Made to Navigate Difficult Terrain
When we picture a goat going up a mountain, we picture it "billy-goating" up big rocks and hard-to-climb areas. Paths that would be described on AllTrails as "rock scrambling" at best. This is a reminder that the terrain on your mountain won't always be smooth, but you have the tools and resources within yourself to traverse the challenges ahead.
You were brought to this mountain for a reason, and you have a lifetime of experience behind you to help navigate the parts you haven't experienced before.
3. Creativity Creates the Path
Goats traversing a mountain don't always have prime opportunities to take their next step or leap. Oftentimes, they're getting creative, sometimes even risky, with a hint of calculation to create the path they're choosing. We, too, need to look at difficult times in our journey with creative eyes so that we can see the opportunity in every contraction.
Creativity will be a key to hold tightly in this next chapter, whatever that means to your relationship with your creative outlets and ventures.
4. Balancing Our Wild and Domesticated Sides
Ancient Greek mythology associates Capricorn with the half-man, half-goat, God of Nature who ruled over woodlands, livestock, and fields. This symbolism invites us to look at the duality within ourselves. How balanced is our wild side with our domesticated side?
This question being asked during Libra season gives us an opportunity to balance these pieces of ourselves by bringing a little more of our wild side to the scales. That's the side of us that will push us through the unknown parts of this mountain we haven't experienced before. Remember, wild doesnโt mean reckless.
5. The Wisdom Beneath the Surface
In ancient Mesopotamian traditions, the Sea-Goat was connected with Ea, also known as Enki, a god associated with wisdom and the waters beneath the earth. Just like an aquifer, we have a deep reservoir of wisdom that lives within us. Our connection to it can become clouded by the beliefs, thoughts, images, ideas, and projections of the society we live in.
This is a time in the zodiac wheel when I feel particularly called to reach these depths within us. When we get quiet enough and deep enough, we feel the wisdom that has lived within us through every chapter of our lives and, as I believe, every lifetime before this one. Wisdom that is ready to guide us toward a more meaningful life in the present.
If practices and services of the occult have been calling to you like tarot readings, mediums, ancestral healing, or akashik records are calling you, answer it.
The Quiet Preparation
Before you go up this mountain, repack your bag with all of the gifts from your ancestors, all of the lessons you have learned, and all of the confidence of what you will find on the other side. You don't have to climb this mountain the same way you climbed the last.
You have become the person who can take responsibility for the experience you want to have. The person who knows what to bring, what to leave behind, and how to support yourself through the terrain ahead.
Simply taking a step each day to get over this moment is the quiet commitment this First Quarter Moon is asking of you.
